County's top cop announces retirement

HAMPSHIRE’S most senior police officer and the longest serving chief constable in the UK will retire in October.

Paul Kernaghan took up his position with Hampshire Constabulary in September 1999 and has been credited with many improvements in the force.

His original seven-year contract was extended as a result of his dedication and good work in the county.

Mr Kernaghan said: “I would like to place on record my thanks to the Hampshire Police Authority for the great honour and privilege they bestowed on me by appointing me as chief constable of Hampshire Constabulary in 1999.

“It has truly been the high point of my career."

Police authority chairman Cllr Jacqui Rayment said: “As the chief constable announces his retirement I would like to say how lucky we have been to have had a chief constable of Mr Kernaghan’s calibre, and we are grateful for all that he has done for policing both here and nationally in his ACPO roles."
