Fight hard if you are opposing a developmentThree years ago, a planning application was made to extend the house next door to us from four flats to seven flats, which are now nearing completion. This development is wholly out of character with the rest of the road.
Along with many neighbours, we objected strongly to Surrey Heath Borough Council about this, without success. I write to encourage anybody who has an extension planned adjacent to them to be prepared to take stringent action to stop such infringement to the facilities and surroundings in which one has invested.
Work has been proceeding at snail’s pace for nearly a year. What had been a beautifully stocked garden has been completely eliminated. On the western side of our house we are now faced with rows of windows looking down into our main rooms and the secluded garden where we were able to relax when we had good weather. There has been incessant noise of machinery for months, where previously we had peace and quiet.
Vehicles have been parked daily on the bend outside and in front of our property, causing potential danger to passing traffic and pedestrians. There has been a marked reduction in the bird life since nearly all the trees and shrubs have been removed. In the future, there will be many more cars travelling in and out and probably parking in the road at the bend.
Be warned if you are faced with similar circumstances. It is now more than four years since the garden was torn apart, so it goes on for a long time. It is worth going as far as you possibly can to try to stop it happening. Looking back, we definitely didn’t go far enough.
