They are not just ‘run of the mill’ migrants expecting a cheap meal ticket but have earned respect and benefits much as any other British soldier. MP Gerald Howarth’s tirade against Major Tikendra Dewan, chairman of the British Gurkha Welfare Society, was unnecessary, unhelpful and stupid. While many would prefer tighter immigration in this country the Gurkhas have long been among our closest, most trustworthy allies. As such, why should they not receive the same benefits, including residency, as any other British soldier?
