Gurkhas have earned the right to equal respectThe Gurkhas have served our country valiantly and faithfully since their conception.
They are not just ‘run of the mill’ migrants expecting a cheap meal ticket but have earned respect and benefits much as any other British soldier.
MP Gerald Howarth’s tirade against Major Tikendra Dewan, chairman of the British Gurkha Welfare Society, was unnecessary, unhelpful and stupid. While many would prefer tighter immigration in this country the Gurkhas have long been among our closest, most trustworthy allies. As such, why should they not receive the same benefits, including residency, as any other British soldier?
Few countries/cultures have fought as hard for us or tried so hard to integrate with our society. Perhaps if we supported peace in the kingdom of Nepal instead of fighting America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan the Nepalese people might be happier to return home.
