Village needs recycling centre at supermarketIt was interesting to read the item (News, January 12) on the saga surrounding the recycling facilities at Budgens supermarket in Lightwater, and the chances of them returning. Reading the list of excuses as to why the facility cannot be reinstated is very depressing, and leaves me with a feeling that it’s just ‘too much trouble’ for Surrey Heath Borough Council to find a way to make this facility work.
Shoppers are sometimes blocking the access road? A resident once swore at the collection staff? This all sounds like a council looking for any justification to abandon a facility it finds to be slightly too inconvenient.
The point is, however awkward it is for the council, that it was hugely convenient for Lightwater shoppers. I’d imagine the vast majority of Lightwater residents could easily find the Budgens car park. How many of us could find the Briars Community Centre, which also has recycling facilities? I had to dig out a map.
It’s also depressing to see that the council has done nothing to encourage use of the Briars facility once it abandoned Budgens. The sign it put up contained no map, and no extra signs have been put up to direct people to the facility. Added to this, it was full to overflowing throughout the Christmas holiday, and the council helpfully locked the gate to the car park on several occasions during the day, to prevent anyone driving up to recycle.
Put simply, it’s not good enough. Either expand doorstep collection to include bottles and cardboard, or sort out the Budgens recycling site and make it work for everyone. How difficult can this be?
